Hate Crime is defined as... 'any criminal offence that is motivated by
hostility or prejudice based upon the victim's disability, race, religion or
belief, sexual orientation, transgender',... this nature of crime can have
far reaching consequences for many people from all walks of life.
A recent incident in Cumbria described the feelings associated with
hate crime, specifically a witness who stated the she 'felt physically sick
witnessing an assault which was happening on the other side of the
road'. Fortunately the incident was reported and a conviction was made
successfully. This is an example of how such a crime can even affect people
who are not directly involved as a third party.
If you are concerned about this, who do you tell if you notice,
witness an incident or are a victim?
Tell us, the Police. We will take your information seriously. Not everyone
feels comfortable walking into a police station to tell us about things like this.
So this campaign offers you two ways you can tell us, without actually visiting
us or ringing us.
You can use this site to report incidents of hate crime whether you are a
victim, witness or third party. You can do this by using the online form which
once sent generates a unique reference number for you to keep which the
police also receive should you wish to make an anonymous report if you are
a victim and need to prove you sent it in the future.
Please note the text reporting service is only available in Cumbria.
